Recommendation
To work out your pond volume
Simply multiply the pond’s length x width x depth x 1000. The result will equal how many litres of water your pond holds..
Determine the desired flow rate:
Smaller pond volumes need to be turned over quicker than larger pond volumes as the water conditions fluctuate often and are less stable.
The flow rate you choose depends on the type of fish you have and their specific needs. As a general guideline, the pond water should be circulated at least once per hour for small ponds (under 3800 litres) and at least once every two hours for larger ponds.
Choose a pump that slightly exceeds your calculated required flow rate. It's usually better to oversize the pump slightly to ensure proper circulation and oxygenation.
Maximum pond volume based on the following
- No fish and few plants - 1000 litres
- Few Fish and plants - 450 litres
- Lots of goldfish and plants - 300 litres
