For every 1 litre of pure water you get in your tank, 5 litres of water go down the drain. While this sounds like a lot of waste, there is a specific reason for it:

Membrane Longevity: The "waste" water is actually cross-flow filtration. It washes the surface of the membrane to prevent minerals (calcium, magnesium) from sticking and "scaling" the pores.

High TDS Tolerance: A $5:1$ ratio is the "safe" setting for areas with hard water or high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). It ensures the membrane doesn't clog prematurely.
