    How does UV work?

The LED Gemicdidal UV-C produces wavelengths from 250-300 nanometers (Nm) the photons enter the cell wall of a pathogen, spore, fungi, or virus and break the DNA so It is no longer able to replicate making it harmless.

    About the state-of-the-art LED UV-C

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. It is a p–n junction diode, which emits light (or photons) when activated. The PearlAqua Micro utilizes small, state-of-the-art, UV-C LEDs, which emit photons in the UV range, to provide pathogen reduction without the use of harmful chemicals or heavy metals. The use of LEDs allows the PearlAqua Micro to achieve full-intensity power upon start-up, withstand unlimited power cycles without impacting device life, and eliminate expensive disposal processes.

    The Benefits

Our PearlAqua Micro creates a brand new category of UV disinfection – Micro UV. It is by far the world’s smallest UV disinfection system. The Micro offers validated disinfection performance through UV-C LEDs and a patented flow cell design. PearlAqua Micro is designed to be integrated into point-of-use systems and processes.

The LEDs inside the PearlAqua last for 10,000 hours. A mercury lamp will have a similar lifespan, but a mercury lamp can only be turned off/on a few times per day. This limitation leads to the lamp remaining on, even when there is no water flow – hence annual replacement. The PearlAqua LED system can be turned on/off an infinite number of times per day, so the unit only runs when water is flowing through it, greatly extending the lamp replacement interval. For example, a PearlAqua unit that is on for 2 hours a day will only need replacing every 10-12 years!  The whole system then must be replaced.

With a significantly lower power draw and no annual lamp replacements, the PearlAqua is ideal for any home, boat, camper, or off-the-grid cabin.

Utilizes small, state-of-the-art UV-C LEDs to provide over 99.99% pathogen
reduction without the use of harmful chemicals or mercury-based UV lamps

    Compliance

Taumata Arowai is the new water services regulator for Aotearoa New Zealand. Taumata Arowai released draft drinking rules last year and is scheduled to implement them sometime this year.  These rules state that UV treatment systems must comply with at least one of 4 standards.  The Pearl AutoMate & the Pearl Micro comply with NSF/ANSI 55:2019 and the Deca complies with the Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual (USEPA 2006b) with NSF/ANSI 55:2019 certificate pending.  The Pearl Micro is also certified by WaterMark (AS/NZS 3497).

    Aquisense UV-C LED

We're off-grid, in a tiny space, and I've been faffing around with water filters for 3 years now and got to the point where I was entirely over it, and entirely over our Reverse Osmosis filter.

I hemmed and hawed for a few days before buying this filter because of the price compared to other UV filters we could use in our setup, but then I realised that because of how little water we take from it, and its flow switch, with a 10,000 hour bulb life, well, the UV LED was going to outlast either of us by actual hundreds of years at our current ~6L/day usage, pay for itself in my sanity immediately, and pay for itself financially in RO membranes (and 12V pumps that don't cark it prematurely from overuse) in just a few years. I ordered the filter over the weekend and it got to us today which means NZ Pump and Water Filters got it out first thing Monday (cheers for that!).

I've got no way of knowing if the UV-C is working, I assume that it is and I'm never going to test - we're on rainwater and filter heavily before it gets to the UV filter, it's probably always been fine, and probably always will be - even with the occasional birds and rodents and possums that find their way onto our roof to hang out and party overnight. I'm just pleased to have the peace of mind something like this offers - we will always have drinkable water (assuming effective pre-filtration prior to the UV-C) and it's nice to feel like I can take that for granted - and nice to do it without an RO.

Finally, just a note in the same vein as Paul the first reviewer. We're also 12V. It's not the first thing I've cut the wall wart off of and hardwired in directly. It is the first that cost ~$800, and the first to not work immediately when I wired it in. I about needed to change my pants. I don't know whether 12V is too low-voltage to do any damage if the polarity is reversed or if they included some specific reverse-polarity protection, but either way after I switched the wires around it's working now (thankfully!). So for future 12V would-be-hard-wire-ers-like-me-who-know-just-enough-to-get-themselves-in-trouble...the wire with dashes is the negative (new one on me). The safe thing to do, of course, would have been to plug in the newly liberated wall wart and test directly from the wall without putting the UV filter in any danger, but hindsight is 20/20.

Anywho - cheers NZ Pump and Water Filters for your super fast service and for being the distributor for this piece of kit that's going to outlast probably anyone who ever reads this review.

    LED uv filter

Thank-you. For making an easy to install and operate unit available.
Would be a good idea to have a couple more adapters in the kit as we struggled to get a 10 or 13mm pipe to connect to the pre filter.
Cutting the transformer off to connect to 12v battery (off grid system), via a fuse was a bit nerve racking, but has worked out.
    Otherwise all went well.
    Regards Paul

    Thanks for your feedback
We will check on the fittings to ensure this is easier in future
    Enjoy this exciting new technology
